Did you know you can reuse your coffee capsules for growing cactuses? Here’s a DIY recycling fun activity if you like to have a few cactuses around your house
How does it work
Who doesn’t love a cactus? It’s low maintenance and lives through winter with you in your home (yes we said in your home, if you let them outside they’ll probably freeze because they contain a lot of water!).
We already posted about how to use used capsules in our gardening activity: here if you need to refresh that! We’ll see now how to reuse them for a cactus!
A capsule as a pot
There isn’t only one way you can use capsules for this purpose. In fact, you can either place them in a terrarium or you can directly use the small capsules as mini pots! The cactus will grow perfectly with this technique. It may not go through perfectly the first time but you can re-tray as many times you want (or at least as many coffees you drink!)
The method
Here’s what you need to do:
- Takes at least 12 cactus cuttings (from a bigger plant). Put them on a paper towel and let them dry (not under the sun!)
- After 3-5 days the cut part should develop some sort of protective film
- Pierce with 3 small holes the bottom and add in the capsule a few grains od desalinated sand
- Pour in some damp soil filling the capsule
- Add in the cutting with the cut part into the soil
- Wait and see: roots will grow and then you can reposition the cactus wherever you want.
It’s important you remember to never water the soil!
Some fun ideas
- You can stick a magnet behind the capsule: this way you’ll be able to place your small cactus on the fridge
- You can also create rows of cactus in capsules to decorate a window
